Creating Focus: the Planning Process
|
|
People who are apt to be generous are inclined to care about their world. In fact, the world offers us so many issues and causes to care about that we can get stuck giving chunks of money to too many non-profits. The satisfaction of giving is short-lived. Or perhaps giving has always been more of a duty than a joy, and a donor doesn’t really have a cause to support.
A signature offering of Benefactory is a step-by-step process to clarify a donor’s interests. Clients may say at the beginning that they have no philanthropic interests, only to discover within the hour of the Planning Process that they care deeply about a field of interestthey just didn’t think they could make a difference.
We are there to help clients learn that they can. The Process involves a conversation based on 22 open-ended questions developed over ten years of experience that lead the client to a statement of philanthropic purpose. The advisor then brainstorms with the client and writes up a detailed recommendation of next steps. |

When a recent client was asked during the Planning Process if he had any debts of gratitude to pay, he lit up. He explained that his own father had died early in his adult life, and that his father-in-law had filled a void and provided an example for which he is unendingly grateful. We brainstormed. Within a month a proposal came before the board of his father-in-law’s exclusive golf club in Florida to start a Golf Academy named after his father-in-law in partnership with the local Boys and Girls Club. The directors, who had never agreed to anything like this before, voted affirmatively, in large part because of the esteem with which their member was held, and because the program was fully funded. A diverse group of 35 boys and girls turned out. After lessons from the club pro the kids spent hours practicing their grip and their back swing. A broad smile filled the father-in-law’s face with all those kids surrounding his golf cart. What a 90th birthday present! |
